This is a very involved application procedure and requires an extensive amount of preparation and work in order to be successful. If this flooring application is something you are thinking about doing, we invite you to read the rest of this article and then give us a call to discuss your particular case in point. We offer this technique after a consultation, and a clear understanding of the desired results you are looking for.

We believe that the staining process in general does require a professional wood worker with in depth experience at staining. This professional flooring company needs to be acquainted with all the types of wood flooring in the market. Some hardwood species take stains readily, while others can be very troublesome to stain to achieve the desired result. Keith Clay Floors can provide this quality service for you. The next question is what type of floor are you considering this process for?

What about older wood floor, can they be stained?

Older Floors can have a color change, some are easy and some are very hard. With all staining, it is a prerequisite to completely refinish the hardwood floor, and make sure removal of all the existing finish and the color that has penetrated into the surface of the wood itself, is complete. The amount of removal of the wood will be dependent on how deep the stain has penetrated into the pores of the wood, as well as what the original stain color was.

Color changes from a more neutral or natural finish will be easiest to complete since little or no staining was done at the original installation. However, if you are considering a change from very dark to a very light color, understand this will entail more sanding of the bare wood. For beveled type floors hand scraping will be necessary. Any of these processes will increase time and cost involved, and need to be budgeted for.

Preparation Is Critical!

When considering any color change, the time and preparation are an imperative. This is true not only when existing finishes are removed, but you must also remove the cleaners that have been used over the years. You may not know what has been used, but failure to remove is very likely going to cause unknown results.

This also pertains to bare wood floors. You may think nothing has been used, but take your chances and...it may not be a pleasant experience. Keith Clay Floors recommends strongly that you call us to come out and examine for these telltales signs. Our staff has someone with years of practical experience that has seen many of these warning signs that can adversely affect the final outcome.

Can Engineered Floors be stained?

Depending on the actual veneer or wear layer of an engineered floor, color changes may not be possible with traditional methods because there isn't enough actual hardwood that can be sanded to bare wood. Only the manufacturer will likely have the information you need to make the best decision. Together we can find out what you need to know.

How Long Does The Process It Take?

Each job varies due to type of wood, colors and prep involved, as well as size of the project and weather conditions. If for example we are using an example of a 500 square foot, square room with furniture moved and ready to go. An experienced professional will require at least two days for a water based finish, while an oil based will usually require at least three days. Other more uncommon applications can take longer as will inclement weather conditions that can affect drying times of stains and finishes. Keith Clay Floors can come out and discuss the options with you based on the type of floor in question.

Keith Clay Floors will allow plenty of time and opportunity for patch testing before doing the entire area. A final inspection done by you before we begin makes sure we have no surprises after the job is complete.
